The Sanctuary
Lone Pine’s story began in 1927, when founder Claude Reid created a refuge for sick and injured koalas at a time when wild koalas were being culled for the fur trade. Jack and Jill were the sanctuary’s first two koalas, and nearly a century later, Lone Pine is now home to more than 100, with that same commitment to care still shaping the work we do today.

Animal Welfare is at the heart of our Sanctuary
From our tiny zebra finches to our two-metre-tall red kangaroos, every animal at Lone Pine has different needs. Good welfare means understanding how each animal experiences its environment and shaping care around their health, behaviour and wellbeing.
